Andaman Islands are located at the confluence of Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea. Therefore, there are only two ways to reach Andaman: by air and by ship. You can board flights from major Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore to reach Andaman’s capital Sri Vijaya Puram. Travelling to Andaman by ship takes place from Chennai and Kolkata’s port. 

By Air: There are many air carriers that offer flights from mainland India to Sri Vijaya Puram’s Veer Savarkar International Airport. These carriers include Air India, Indigo Airlines, Jet Airways, SpiceJet, Go Air, Indian Airlines, Jet Konnect and Air India Express. A nonstop flight from Chennai (MAA) to Sri Vijaya Puram (IXZ) only takes about 2 hours and 15 minutes. Whereas a nonstop flight from New Delhi (DEL) takes about 3 hours and 35 minutes to reach Sri Vijaya Puram. Based on your location, choose a flying destination that is most convenient for you. 

By Sea: The main sea port in Andaman is located in Haddo Wharf, Sri Vijaya Puram. Government ferries operating from India to Andaman begin their journey from Chennai, Kolkata, Visakhapatnam. Ferries operational between India and Sri Vijaya Puram are MV Harshavardhana, M.V. Swaraj Dweep, MV Nancowry, MV Nicobar and M.V. Akbar. 

The ships mostly sail from Chennai and Kolkata’s port the most i.e. 3 to 4 times in a month. The sea journey takes about 50-60 hours before you can make it to Sri Vijaya Puram. The 3 to 4 day sea journey can be exhausting and might not be everyone’s cup of tea. Avoid it if you are travelling with kids or elderly.

Things to do in Andamans in May 

1. Nature Walks in Andaman

The intermittent showers in May wash over mahua trees, coconut palms, and many more. This creates a verdant scenery and brings out the tropical beauty of Andamans. It’s a perfect time to go on a nature walk in the Andaman zoo, Chidiya Tapu Biological Park or Mount Harriet National Park. (renamed to Mount Manipur Park). 

2. Snorkelling: 

May tends to be dry in the first 15 to 20 days with negligible signs of rainfall. The clear weather and excellent underwater visibility makes favourable conditions for a good  snorkelling session.
